Established in 1979 in the sunny city of Brisbane, 4MBS began life as a small community classical music radio station, broadcasting on 103.7FM. Today, we are one of Australia’s premiere community radio stations, producing three different radio services. We also produce festivals, plays and concerts, and provide arts and educational services.
Our Mission
To promote, entertain, and educate people about classical music and related arts. In addition to broadcasting, we provide performance and employment opportunities for Queensland talent – not only musicians, but actors, directors, composers, writers, and lighting and set designers. 4MBS is also recognised for its promotion of young and emerging musicians, and artists through many school, university and community based activities.
At our core, we are one of Australia’s premier community radio stations, but we are so much more than a radio station! In addition to broadcasting, 4MBS runs two annual arts festivals in Brisbane, and is a production house for festivals, concerts, theatre productions and arts support services.
4MBS is also responsible for commissioning and producing the nostalgic play Cribbie; for several nationwide tours of the classic play Amadeus; and for the 2010 performance of the record-breaking Gothic Symphony, featured in the award-winning suspenseful and beautiful documentary The Curse of the Gothic Symphony.
A small number of paid staff and around 300 volunteers work tirelessly around the clock to make our broadcasting and events happen. Even if you came by on a Saturday night, you’d see a dedicated volunteer or two behind the microphone!
4MBS broadcasts from a lovely old Queenslander in Coorparoo, converted into a radio and performance studio! Feel free to stop by to see us, or to visit our small radio museum which houses a collection of vintage radios!
