Now in its 24th year, this 14-night cruise will sail on the magnificent Sea Princess® to ports in New Zealand. In addition to all regular shipboard entertainment, guests will be treated to exclusive classical music events themed around BEETHOVEN AND FRIENDS. Concerts will be performed by an ensemble led by violinist MARGARET CONNOLLY, featuring pianist MARK HOOPER. There will also be music appreciation talks, in conversations, and music films.
OUR ITINERARY After departing Brisbane, the cruise will visit seven attractions in New Zealand: Fiordland National Park, Dunedin (Port Chalmers), Akaroa, Wellington, Napier, Tauranga and Auckland.
Our cruise offers a range of highlights, including the scenic cruising of the majestic Fiordland National Park, the Scottish port of Dunedin with its architecturally famous railway station and Lanarch Castle with its beautiful gardens and incredible views, plus the town of Akaroa with its French history and flavour, its quaint streets and shops and magnificent harbour.
Napier is a small slice of the past, with its art-deco buildings and vintage motor vehicles. Tauranga is a delightful town well worth exploring, and for people with a fair level of fitness, the 230m Mt Maunganui is well worth the climb, affording an excellent view in every direction.
Wellington is the nation’s political capital, while Auckland is the main commercial centre. Both cities offer opportunities for exploring or shopping. There is so much to see and do in New Zealand!
OUR MUSICIANS For this cruise we have an ensemble of brilliant and highly experienced musicians, including the superb pianist Mark Hooper. Mark is a former Lecturer in Piano at Oxford University, Piano Pedagogy Lecturer at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, and performs regularly internationally.
The ensemble is led by Margaret Connolly, a violinist with the Wiener Volksoper and other ensembles throughout Europe and Japan, and with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. She has been a regular performer at the Bangalow Chamber Music Festival and in recent years with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra.
The music theme of the 2019 Classic Concerts Cruise is BEETHOVEN AND FRIENDS. Explore the genius of Beethoven and the composers of his era through sixconcerts at sea, music appreciation sessions, ‘In Conversations’ with the musicians, and music films. There is plenty to do even if you don’t go ashore in the ports we visit!
Music talks will be delivered by GARY THORPE OAM, General Manager of 4MBS Classic FM in Brisbane. Gary has a wealth of experience in the field of classical music, and will enable you to gain an insight into the wider world of classical music and composers.
