They are very important to our day-to-day operations, producing and presenting the lovely programs you listen to, and generally keeping the station running smoothly!

Our volunteers keep 4MBS on the air and without them, the station would not exist. 4MBS volunteers are dedicated people from all walks of life who are interested in community radio, fine music, and the opportunity to associate with other music lovers. It can also provide very valuable job skills for people currently seeking employment in many different fields.

Some volunteers make very valuable contributions to the operation of 4MBS by giving just an hour or two a month, or an hour or two a week. Others are involved on a more regular basis. This depends on the activity, and how much time you can give.

Do you love compiling music playlists? This is the volunteering job for you! Prepare on-air programs with music from the station’s library, or bring in your own collection!

When musicians or record labels send us new CDs, the details of the CDs need to be entered into our computer database. If you have basic computer skills and a good knowledge of classical music, this may suit you.

Each month we publish a Program Guide, which lists nearly every piece of music broadcast on 4MBS. We always need volunteers to type program listings on a computer from the program sheets.

Perhaps you have a voice for radio! Our announcers present programs prepared either by our programmers or by themselves (depending on the program).

Most of the music you hear on 4MBS is played from CDs found in our library, but CDs don’t jump off the shelves on their own! Each day we need Library Supervisors to collect the relevant CDs from our shelves for the following days’ programs, and put them on our dedicated shelf ready for announcers.

Our subscribers are vital to us, so this role involves dealing with enquiries from subscribers. Good word processing skills and a pleasant telephone manner are required.

This is a very important part of the Station’s operations as it’s often the first point of contact for potential subscribers, sponsors etc. The work involves answering incoming calls, handling enquiries about new subscriptions and any current activity of the station.

One morning a month, our volunteers pack our printed Program Guides, in order to be delivered to subscribers. If you don’t mind a little bit of physical activity while chatting to fellow music lovers, or a walk around the neighbourhood delivering the programs, this could suit you.

4MBS Classic FM records well over 100 concerts a year of local and international performers, to be broadcast on air. If you have an interest in recording concerts or being involved in producing the finished product, volunteer for our Concert Recording Team!
